"Her Boxed Beaded Gown"

Recently, I was part of a local art show where this painting entitled "Her Boxed Beaded Gown" was displayed.  I met a local couple where the husband was a visual artist and the wife was a poet.  They had the idea of combining art and poetry together in a show!  They gathered a group of artists together and gave each artist the book of poetry called "Solitary Spin" written by Barbara Sabol to read.  We were to choose a poem from the book to use as inspiration for our art.  I found this poem called "Circa 1943" in the book and used it to paint from.  I used metallic paints on this one which gives the entire painting a beautiful shimmer!  This painting is now up for sale on my website and can be purchased HERE.

Circa 1943

Day Dreaming on the side of Prospect Hill

my mother is caught by some Eddie with his lens

before the swirl of champagne, before the dishwater swill

(years before she waltzed with my father in her beaded silk)

my mother was caught by a beau, quick with his lens;

some Eddie, by the flirt of her eyes in the sepia still,

years before she waltzed with my father in beaded silk

she posed in her swim skirt, chin in her fists, a slight head tilt--

flirting with some Eddie, one eye squinting behind his lens

while she posed in halter top and swim skirt, her head at a tilt

(before the dusty attic moths have had their fill

of her boxed beaded gown, its yellow silk.)

Before the attic moths had their fill of silk and lace

she sold cufflinks to my father at Swanks, downtown.

He whirled her around the hall in her beaded gown

and danced her down that hill, leaving just a trace

of her teenaged sepia image, blurred to white at its edge

like the swirl of champagne and an unbroken waltz;

caught in the gaze of the luckless him, whose camera left

the ghost of a girl dreaming in the long grass of Prospect Hill.

Custom Fashion Illustrations

These last few weeks I have done a couple of custom fashion illustrations for some California beauties.  Nikia who is a style blogger at Themadmaven (@madmavenstyle on Instagram/http://madmavenstyle.com)  reached out to me about doing a fashion illustration for her.  She is getting married next year and had the vision of what she wants to look like on her wedding day and wanted me to draw it for her.  She supplied me with her Ersa Atelier wedding gown, a photo of herself, the braids she wants, and also the hair accessory to hold her veil.  I absolutely adore everything about this look!!

First I started sketching the basic lines of her on my paper.  First I drew her hair without bangs, but then she caught me just in the nick of time to let me know that she just cut some beautiful fringe that she would have for her wedding. I worked a little salon magic and "cut" some bangs for her.

Then I started developing my drawing and adding shading to it.

Then I drew all of the pretty little details on her "victorian meets folk" dress with pencil.

I couldn't wait to paint her beautiful copper hair!

Then I colored her lips, and inked some mascara and other details on the illustration.

I used her hair piece as inspiration for the background and used a green to compliment the copper tones.  Of course I then laid the last detail down which was some gold details.  I just loved doing this piece and she was so happy to have her wedding look on paper to have for years to come!

Another custom fashion illustration I did was of Lisa of Evolution Vintage http://www.evolution-vintage.com . She has always wanted a fashion illustration of herself.  She supplied me with a photo to work from and I love her unique way of styling clothes.  She dresses very authentically and encourages others to do the same!

I mean, how fun are these striped socks paired with these SJP collection "Carrie" shoes?!

As I decided how to do the background behind her, I landed on using a vintage hanger as part of the design.  I repeated it and formed a circle out of them and added watercolor inside of the circle.

It is really fun do do art for people in the fashion world who really appreciate these fashion illustrations and who have such an amazing sense of style!  For any commissions, collaborations or questions email me at taratories@gmail.com.

Custom Bridal Fashion Illustrations

This week I had the wonderful privilege of capturing a lovely bride on paper.  Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life and I love memorializing that day by capturing the beauty of the bride in all her glory.

Meagan is wearing a gorgeous Vera Wang bridal gown where the bow is competing with her to be the star of the show!

I will never forget the larger than life balloons that she and her new husband carried.  They were awesome and I loved being able to incorporate them into this piece.

My favorite thing about this photo is the wind blowing the balloons and her veil all around!  I love the joy in their faces and I couldn't help but smile when I worked on this piece.  I am now taking orders for custom bridal fashion illustrations. Email me at taratories@gmail.com today if you are interested in having a custom illustration done of you or someone else and memorializing the best day of your life!

Persy Bridal Fashion Illustration

Last week I worked on a new fashion illustration and, to my surprise, I woke up this morning to seeing my illustration featured on the Persy Fashion instagram page as well as the Persy Couture Facebook page!  What an honor!

I chose to illustrate Persy's Lily wedding gown which I decided was my favorite wedding gown of theirs. I find that it is a lot easier for me to draw something I really love so that I can put my best creative foot forward.  I love everything about this dress. The cool collar, the layers of ruffles, the asymmetry of the the ruffles, the way the ruffles become longer towards the bottom, and the lace details.

I always start with the face and work my way down.  Doing a sketchy first layer before I add more detail, etc.

Once I finish the sketch, I go over areas that I feel need darker shading and more contrast, and help the form become more 3 dimensional in appearance.

Before I added the watercolor in the background, I added some masking fluid which keeps areas of the paper white.  The lines of the ruffles reminded me of the lines of string lights so that is what I used to inspire the background.

I then used a couple different shades of blue in the background to give it the feeling of sky and washed over all of the masking fluid once it dried.

Then for my favorite part, the masking fluid removal.  This part is so much fun and I really enjoy the white being revealed and it all coming together.

I decided to add some gold paint on some of the lights...

and I felt like the background needed some subtle touches of black to tie in with the black areas in her dress so I added some string light silhouettes with my black ink pen.  I'm really happy with the finished product!  She is now up for sale on my Etsy shop so she can be yours today!
